The Bushmans River With An Aussie

Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Trout
[caption id="attachment_572" align="alignright" width="300"] Underwater Brown Trout[/caption] Thankfully the weather on Saturday was rather more pleasant than on Friday. We were therefor up at 5am and headed for the Bushman's River to do a little small stream fly fishing. Competition was in the air since my uncle was out from Australia and I had been dominated by him on the golf course. Thankfully I got off to a good start and landed my first fish just a few casts in on a small elk hair caddis. Nigel struggled a little thanks to what he deemed to be "small fish and light tackle". Apparently it was somewhat different to the tigerfishing of the previous week. In fact he struck so hard on his first wild brown that it sailed past us…

Warren’s DFT Demo Tie

Fly Fishing, Fly Tying
[caption id="attachment_568" align="alignleft" width="200"] Warren Prior's DFT Demo[/caption] On Monday 1 October I had the pleasure of being the guest tyer at the Durban Fly Tyer's monthly meeting. Although I was originally asked to demonstrate a salt water fly I opted for something a little more intricate and exciting to tie. Since past flies had been aimed mainly at salt water fish, trout and tigers I initially decided to tie a yellowfish fly. My first idea was therefore to tie the famous orange hotspot. Sadly however, with all the recent rains in Kwa-Zulu Natal, the rivers are a little high and muddy and yellowfishing has therefore taken a back seat. I therefore made a small change and decided to tie the Pheasant Tail Nymph, or PTN as it is commonly…

Baha/DFT Harbour Outing

Fly Fishing, Salt Water
[caption id="attachment_565" align="alignright" width="300"] Durban Harbour Fly Fishing Outing[/caption] The 30th of September saw DFT head down to Durban Harbour. No less than 20 fly fishermen congregated in the Café Fish parking lot in eager anticipation to lay claim to the many species that can be caught in the Harbour. We made our way onto the banks at 6:30 to fish the pulling tide. Earlier in the week we had heard reports of a shark sighting, so the boys timidly walked knee deep onto the banks keeping an attentive eye out for this elusive shark. On arriving at the drop off we were greeted by a pod of dolphins smashing the fish we were about to target! All of us stood in awe as we watched them no more than…

[caption id="attachment_558" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Warren Prior Fly Fishing Kamberg At Sunset[/caption] Another long weekend and another trip to the Berg to dominate some wild browns and rainbows. Sadly my last minute booking meant Kamberg was he only venue available and I was forced to head there for the umpteenth time, which isn’t really a bad thing. [caption id="attachment_559" align="alignleft" width="300"] Fly Fishing The Bushmans River[/caption] Friends of ours were staying at Giants Castle (yes, I was jealous) so Sharon and I headed for the Bushman’s River to kick the weekend off. We left just after 5am and were on the river by 8am ready to hunt down a few wild browns. Thanks to the recent snow falls and heavy rains the river was high, but definitely fishable. Things started off…

Cape Vidal (With The DFT And South Coast Fly Anglers)

Fly Fishing, Salt Water, Trip Report
[caption id="attachment_544" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Cape Vidal Teaser Image[/caption] After the success of the first Cape Vidal trip in April we headed back, this time with 14 fly fishermen from Team Baha, the DFT and South Coast Fly Anglers, to try our luck yet again. [caption id="attachment_547" align="alignleft" width="300"] The Boys Fishing The Ledges At Vidal[/caption] Nick picked me up just before 4am and we quickly passed Jan and Gavin on Fields Hill as if they were standing still. Clearly it was going to be a long drive for them with Jan cruising at a conservative 100km/hr on the freeway. Our first stop was at the garage just before the Mvoti Toll Plaza where we met up with Clinton and Hayden (and waited for Jan and Gavin). They eventually arrived as…

Fly Fishing, Fresh Water, Yellowfish
[caption id="attachment_535" align="alignright" width="300"] Natal Yellowfish (Scaly)[/caption]With the streams opening on the 1st September Nick and I planned the mandatory, season opening, trip to the Berg. But then something strange happened, a friend invited Nick and I to fish a stretch of the Umkomaas with him. After much deliberation we decided that the trout could wait another week or two and readily took our friend up on the offer. And then the second strange thing happened, our friend cancelled. None the less, with plans in place, we climbed into the car on Saturday morning and headed for waters unknown in search of Natal yellowfish (or the scaly as they call them here). Our arrival was hindered somewhat by a mountain bike race taking place at the same venue. Thankfully we…

[caption id="attachment_532" align="alignleft" width="300"] Rocky Bay[/caption]The 26th of August saw the first DFT saltwater outing run by myself and Baha Fly Fishing. I was a bit apprehensive on Saturday when a huge buster came through and really turned the surf upside down. I was unsure as to the number of attendants, but thankfully on Sunday morning no less than 10 guys pitched up with rods in hand. After kitting up the guys made their way down to the beach and headed off in various directions. Some guys opted to fish the gullies and pools to the south, while a handful of guys walked north to fish the deeper waters along the beach. Conditions were far from ideal with the massive shore break and lots of seaweed off the beach. Nevertheless…

The First Baha Challenge

Fly Fishing, Salt Water
[caption id="attachment_528" align="alignright" width="300"] The Casino Beach Challenge[/caption] Sunday morning saw the first small Baha Fly Fishing Challenge which was held at Casino Beach. We all met in the Suncoast parking lot in a light drizzle where we kitted up and tied on our favourite flies. Once everyone was ready we headed down to the beach and the challenge began. Thankfully the surf was a lot cleaner than expected after the heavy rains and snowfalls in the Drakensberg. The boys split into small groups and began fishing their way up and down the beach. Sadly only two fish came out that morning, a small wave garrick and a similarly small thornfish. Fishing between seasons is always tough but we were hoping to at least pick up a small shad. As…
